Wednesday, Feb. 10
gotta make this short. bruce is having a math lesson at the apt. with the kids while i snuck away for some internet cafe time. still can´t figure out how to post pics, but have the camera on my possession at least. we took a cable car called the Teleferico up the side of a hill at the base of Pinchincha a volcano that borders Quito. Once up the hill there are a series of other hills to climb all the way to something called Rocu Pinchincha which is either the volcano itself or close to it. Needless to say we did not get all the way up, but did some very cool climbing in clouds and light rain to about halfway there. The altitude is still a factor and going walking uphill at all feels like someone is sqeezing your lungs. Bruce was very proud of his lung capacity and says it is the result of careful training by smoking just the right amount of cigarettes.

good things: I can understand Bruce speak Spanish, the family is together almost 24 hours a day, our gringo skin is acclimating to the sun by being a bright shade of red, i went running by myself by doing laps around a park this morning; it was very liberating

bad things¨: the family is together almost 24 hours a day, Bruce still hasn´t written a blog entry you just keep having to hear my voice, i can´t understand anyone but Bruce when they speak to me, very few people understand my franglish(spanish, french and english combination). i could barely run for 30 minutes before my lungs burst into flame.

  1. Hi Bruce & Beth! Hope all is well! We are all anxiously awaiting Bruce's first blog report. I was just wondering after your last post how the running felt at 10,000 ft. I know from experience it "sucks", but you will get use to it. Looking forward to seeing some pictures!

Ps - hi to Max & Jane

  2. THink of the shape you will be in when you come down from altitude! There are two volcanoes there; both are named in Ketchwa. One means old mountain and the other is young, only one is still "active". It is supposed to be a nice day trip climb. THe restaurant at the top of the cable car thingy is pretty good for local fare. Have you tried some of the lunch places? On Sundays (Saturdays?) if you go towards Plaza Grande take a right instead of the usual right that you normally take to Plaza Grande (Chile). Go one block passing all the store fronts then take a left at Cuenca. Two doors in or so there will be a pig's head sticking out of a garage type door and a plump greasy lady there serving up some of the best Hornados around! My mouth is watering!!! Across the street you will se a bug shopping complex. I would wait to go in there until you get that street strut down. Gringos are easy targets there as it is crowded. Very well worth a couple of visits later. Older folks may come up to you there warning you away 'cause they're looking out for you. If you don't have huge SLR lenses sticking from your body, you will be alright. Paul

  3. Hey, Beth,

If you wish to post pics: Just above the computer's window where you input your blog text, there should be a little 'blue-sky' thumbnail/image. Click on it. A new window will open, click the 'Browse' button. If your camera is plugged into the computer, clicking the 'browse' button will 'find' the camera. Double click on your camera and select the image you want posted. Then click 'upload image.' After it uploads, hit 'publish now' and you should be set. 'See' you soon,

    Pete

  4. Hi Beth,

OK, we are settling back in after San Diego Reunion. John Neary came back this week to take over his British Lit Survey. A bit of normalcy.

How did Carnival go this week. I presume that it is over and that everyone has begun Lent, yes? Easter Week will be another festival I'm sure. Semana Santa should also be very interesting.

We will give you a phone call soon, hopefully this weekend.

Keep on enjoying yourselves. Say hola! to everyone.

    Un beso,

    Dad
